Set in the contemporary and rural village of Koonwarra this community event exemplifies the best of local produce. The market was founded in November 2000 by a not for profit association of the regions producers. Our local network of producers come from Koonwarra, Leongatha, Mirboo North, Allambie South, Thorpdale, Childers, Kardella, Korumburra, Port Franklin, Fish Creek, Foster, Loch, Drouin, Inverloch, Wonthaggi.

This popular authentic market is accredited with the Victorian Farmers Market Association thus ensuring the producers/stallholders grow, make or catch their products. egions growers, producers and speciality food-makers.

The monthly Koonwarra Farmers Market has plenty to celebrate.  A variety of over 40 seasonal stalls delight patrons with an enticing assortment of produce presented by a network of local farmers, growers and specialty food producers. Since its inception this monthly event rapidly developed a reputation for being a friendly community minded gathering of locals and visitors to the region.

Products that are not available in supermarkets are always a feature, with many unique items. Market guidelines allow for minimal duplication of products to maximize the wide variety of products available from this region. It is also a great bonus for the customer to be able to talk to the growers and makers of the products on offer.

This Farmers’ Market has a well-deserved reputation for connecting and strengthening the local community’s sustainable food production, economy and well-being. The Market continues to help stimulate, promote and distribute local fresh food from local primary producers, growers, hobby farmers, home gardeners and small specialty food makers.

Going to Koonwarra’s monthly Farmers Market is also good for the principles of an ecological farm environment; organic and chemical free wholesome food production is actively encouraged. The Farmers’ Market concept also helps to reduce “food miles” from producer to consumer. Garden-fresh local food is made available economically and resourcefully to consumers.

Customers frequently express surprise at the affordable prices and quality on offer; as a result there are an increasing number of regular patrons eager to access their favourite products knowing that they are directly supporting local small producers.

Throughout the year this monthly market reflects the changing seasons with a diverse range of produce on offer. Not everyone has the time to bake in the kitchen, look after chooks or manage a vegetable garden so this is the opportunity to get the best of fresh local vegetables, fruit and artisan local produce.

Relax, enjoy the attractive Memorial Parks atmosphere and have a picnic in the shade on the chairs and tables provided. You may even spot one of the local Koalas in the overhanging trees. On wet days the market embraces the adjoining hall. Remember to be early, the produce is all eagerly sought after.
